Life is not about avoiding the storms, it is about learning to live with the rain.
Dear Friends and Family:
More on the Swine Flu and some repeated from last week:
Associated Press
New studies show that many people spread swine flu for a week or more after symptoms first appear, and doctors say coughing may be a better sign than fever for telling who is contagious.
Health officials have been telling people to avoid contact with others for a day after their fever goes away. The new research suggests they may need to be careful for longer, especially at home where the risk of spreading the germ is highest.
“This study shows you’re not contagious for a day or two. You’re probably contagious for about a week,” said Gaston De Serres, a scientist at the Institute of Public Health in Quebec, Canada. He presented one of the studies Monday at a microbiology conference.
It is unclear whether the new research will prompt the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to rethink its prior advice.
Long breaks from school and from work don’t seem worth it for a virus that now seems to cause mostly mild illness, said the CDC’s flu chief, Nancy Cox.
Swine flu is spreading so widely now that confining the sick does less good, she said. “We tried to have our guidance balance out all of these factors,” she said. “It’s just virtually impossible not to have virus introduced into settings such as schools and universities.’
From Last Week: According to Fox News (pediatrician 11/3/09) the great majority of children who have died due to this flu have died when they have relapsed, not during the initial onset. In other words, they get better, play, act normal, then begin to cough, get a fever of about 103 for as much a couple of days, begin to have breathing problems and succumb shortly after that. The advice is get these kids to the doctor right after they start coughing during the relapse or second bout. DO NOT ASSUME THAT THIS SECOND COUGHING BOUT IS A NEW OR DIFFERENT INFECTION. GET THESE KIDS TO THE DOCTOR AND MEDICATED, ASAP.
PREVENTING RE-INFECTION: Very common sources of re-infection are pathogens (virus) living in and on dental appliances. That includes: toothbrushes, retainers, dentures, etc. I know, I know; once a dentist always a dentist… but this can save your life, listen up. The virus will grow on the pours of the plastic or on plaques and tartar deposited on dental appliances, especially if proper home care is ignored. Throw away that tooth brush, or sterilize it with a teaspoon of Clorox and a glass of water, after recovery to prevent a re-infection… I personally favor throwing it away and starting new. As far as the retainers, partials, night guards, and dentures, etc. the glass of water and Clorox are a necessity. Ask your dentist if the Clorox will change the color of the metals used, for the most part this is the safest way to sterilize them.
PREVENTION: VACCINATE, BUT THEY ARE IN VERY SHORT SUPPLY. So for common sense prevention: Remember that the two portals of entry for this virus are the mouth and the nose. When you sanitize with an alcohol based hand sanitizer (make certain your hands are clean before you use these products) be certain the product has at least 60% alcohol in it. Also consider using a small amount on the opening of the nose (alcohol will dry out the moist membranes’ of the nose, so do not ‘stuff it in’… just at the openings). Here is another must, for those of you with facial hair, especially moustaches, after washing your face and facial hair, use this product on those areas. Mustaches and beards are a favorite hiding place for allergens and germs of all types. It does not take a rocket science to understand how easily the movement from these areas around the mouth and nose into the body. Washing and sanitizing have more to do with prevention than treatment.
TRATMENT AND PREVENTION: I don’t know what category to place anti-oxident vitamins such as C (Ester C is best), B complex, bioflavinoids, E, picnagonol, and others… but consider increasing your uptake on all.
TREATMENT: If you come down with H1N1 you have forty eight hours to limit its effect (adults and children). This flu, at this time, is susceptible to a product called TAMIFLU. This product, like the vaccine, is in short supply and will control (kill) the virus in the early stages. This medication can be nauseating. It comes in a capsule for adults and should be taken with food to limit the potential of nausea. TAMIFLU in the early stage is the very best treatment. It is effective only if it is started in the first 48 hours after symptoms occur. (From TAMIFLU website: “Treat the Flu with TAMIFLU… When you or someone in your family begins to experience flu symptoms, you have 48 hours to take action. Trust TAMIFLU, the number-one prescribed antiviral flu medicine*:
• For flu treatment: When taken within two days of experiencing symptoms, TAMIFLU works by helping to stop the flu virus from spreading inside the body
• For flu prevention: When you have been exposed to someone with the flu, taking TAMIFLU can help keep the virus from making you sick
TAMIFLU is not a substitute for the flu shot; vaccination is the first line of defense for flu protection”
REMEMBER THIS PRODUCT IS IN SHORT SUPPLY, GETTING TO THE MD IN TIME IS THE BEST PROTECTION FOR BOTH ADULTS AND CHILDREN! Let them make the diagnosis, every runny nose is not Swine Flu.
One more thing Tamifluu may cause nausea in many… we found that we had to take it with food (just like the directions advise!). But do not hault the medication… find something for the kids to maske the flavor and adults take the capsules with food.
Lighter Side
Having lost both roommates, Ashley
recently ran short of cash and
cannot pay the rent (again) on her
3 bedroom townhouse. Like she has
done many times in the past, she
e-mailed her grandfather asking for
some financial help. Here is his
reply:
Sweetheart,
I received your request for
assistance.
Ashley, you know I love you dearly
and I’m sympathetic to your
financial plight. Unfortunately,
times have changed. With the
election of President Obama, your
grandmother and I have had to set
forth a bold new economic plan of
our own…”The Ashley Economic
Empowerment Plan.” Let me explain.
Your grandmother and I are
life-long, wage-earning tax payers.
We have lived a comfortable life,
as you know, but we have never had
the fancier things like European
vacations, luxury cars, etc. We
have worked hard and were looking
forward to retiring soon. But the
plan has changed. Your president
is raising our personal and
business taxes significantly. He
says it is so he can give our hard
earned money to other people. Do
you know what this means, Ashley?
It means less for us, and we must
cut back on many business and
personal expenses.
You know the wonderful receptionist
who worked in my office for more
than 23 years? The one who always
gave you candy when came over to
visit? I had to let her go last
week. I can’t afford to pay her
salary and all of the government
mandated taxes that go with having
employees. Your grandmother will
now work 4 days a week to answer
phones, take orders and handle the
books. We will be closed on
Fridays and will lose even more
income to the Wal-Mart.
I’m also very sorry to report that
your cousin Frank will no longer be
working summers in the warehouse.
I called him at school this
morning. He already knows about it
and he’s upset because he will have
to give up skydiving and his yearly
trip to Greenland to survey the
polar bears.
That’s just the business side of
things. Some personal economic
effects of Obama’s new taxation
policies include none other than
you. You know very well that over
the years your grandmother and I
have given you thousands of dollars
in cash, tuition assistance, food,
housing, clothing, gifts, etc.,
etc. But by your vote, you have
chosen to help others — not at
your expense — but at our expense.
If you need money now sweetheart, I
recommend you call 202-456-1111.
That is the direct phone number for
the White House. You yourself told
me how foolish it is to vote
Republican. You said Mr. Obama is
going to be the People’s President,
and is going to help every American
live a better life. Based on
everything you’ve told me, along
with all the promises we heard
during the campaign, I’m sure Mr.
Obama will be happy to transfer
some stimulus money into your bank
account. Have him call me for the
account number which I memorized
years ago.
Perhaps you can now understand what
I’ve been saying all my life: those
who vote for a president should
consider the impact on the nation
as a whole, and not be just
concerned with what they can get
for themselves. What Obama
supporters don’t seem to realize is
all of the money he is
redistributing to illegal aliens
and non-taxpaying Americans (the
so-called “less fortunate”) comes
from tax-paying families.
Remember how you told me, “Only the
richest of the rich will be
affected”? Well guess what, honey?
Because we own a business, your
grandmother and I are now
considered to be the richest of the
rich. On paper, it might look that
way, but in the real world, we are
far from it.
As you said while campaigning for
Obama, some people will have to
carry more of the burden so all of
America can prosper. You
understand what that means, right?
It means that raising taxes on
productive people results in them
having less money; less money for
everything, including
granddaughters.
I’m sorry, Ashley, but the well has
run dry. The free lunches are
over. I have no money to give you
now.
So, congratulations on your choice
for “change.” For future
reference, I encourage you to try
and add up the total value of the
gifts and cash you have received
from us, just since you went off to
college, and compare it to what you
expect to get from Mr. Obama over
the next 4 (or
years. I have
not kept track of it, Ashley. It
has all truly been the gift of our
hearts.
Remember, we love you dearly….but
from now on you’ll need to call the
number mentioned above. Your
“Savior” has the money we would
have given to you. Just try and
get it from him.
Good luck, sweetheart.
Love,
Grandpa.
American Kids vs. Italian Kids
American kids: Move out when they’re 18 with the full
support of their parents.
Italian kids: Move out when they’re 28, having saved enough
money for a house, and are two weeks away from getting
married….. unless there’s room in the basement for the
newlyweds.
American kids: When their Mom visits them, she brings a
Bundt cake, and you sip coffee and chat.
Italian kids: When their Mom visits them, she brings 3 days
worth of food, begins to tidy up, dust, do the laundry, and
rearrange the furniture.
American kids: Their dads always call before they come over
to visit them, and it’s usually only on special occasions.
Italian kids: Are not at all fazed when their dads show up,
unannounced, on a Saturday morning at 8:00, and starts
pruning the fruit trees. If there are no fruit trees, he’ll
plant some.
American kids: Always pay retail, and look in the Yellow
Pages when they need to have something done.
Italian kids: Call their dad or uncle, and ask for another
dad’s or uncle’s phone number to get it done.
American kids: Will come over for cake and coffee, and get
only cake and coffee. No more.
Italian kids: Will come over for cake and coffee, and get
antipasto, wine, a pasta dish, a choice of two meats,
salad, bread, a cannoli, fruit, espresso, and a few after
dinner drinks.
American kids: Will greet you with ‘Hello’ or ‘Hi’.
Italian kids: Will give you a big hug, a kiss on your
cheek, and a pat on your back.
American kids: Call your parents Mr. and Mrs.
Italian kids: Call your
parents Mom and Dad.
American kids: Have never seen you cry.
Italian kids: Cry with you.
American kids: Will eat
at your dinner table and leave.
Italian kids: Will spend hours there, talking, laughing,
and just being together.
American kids: Know few things about you.
Italian kids: Could write a book with direct quotes from you.
American kids: Eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches on
soft mushy white bread.
Italian kids: Eat Genoa Salami and Provolone sandwiches on
crusty Italian bread (for breakfast).
American kids: Will leave you behind if that’s what the

Billy Graham’s Prayer For Our Nation
‘Heavenly Father, we come before you today to ask your forgiveness and to seek your direction and guidance. We know Your Word says, ‘Woe to those who call evil good,’ but that is exactly what we have done. We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and reversed our values. We have exploited the poor and called it the lottery. We have rewarded laziness and called it welfare.. We have killed our unborn and called it choice. We have shot abortionists and called it justifiable. We have neglected to discipline our children and called it building self esteem. We have abused power and called it politics.. We have coveted our neighbor’s possessions and called it ambition. We have polluted the air with profanity and pornography and called it freedom of expression. We have ridiculed the time-honored values of our forefathers and called it enlightenment. Search us, Oh God, and know our hearts today; cleanse us from every sin and Set us free. Amen!’
