The Best of Bones: They Still Don’t Get It

I guess when I read the following article from the “Globe and Mail” I expected a different conclusion.  Perhaps I expected the Canadian Press to have a more reasonable approach to the events of the day.  I was left with the conclusion that left is left and right is correct.  Then I thought about Ronald Reagan’s statement, ‘they just don’t get it’, and I realize that it is just as valid today as it was in the eighties.

When I read about all of the problems this nation is facing, I expected any rationale columnist, especially if they resided in another nation, to conclude that ‘the buck stops… well somewhere around Pennsylvania Ave’… but no, the main stream media, be they north or south of the border, is still willing to assign blame to anybody right of center.

It is disturbing these days for the country’s friends to watch the Great Republic’s politics, to wonder about its economy, to tremble at its deficits, and to shake their heads at its Supreme Court that has struck down corporate contribution limits in politics and reaffirmed the right to bear arms, to the intense joy of the gun lobby.

Well, can I say I disagree with that entire paragraph?  First, it blames the economy and deficit not on the failure of an 800+ billion dollar Stimulus Package and an additional 700+ billion dollar TARP plan (Obama had control of half, Bush half); not on the failure of Freddy Max and Fanny Ma; and not on the socialization of 60% of the economy by the Obama Administration, but on two decisions by the Supreme Court.  The first was that any entity or individual has the right to contribute to the cause of their choice… a decision which clearly in agreement with the American Constitution.  The second is the support of this same court to assure the people of their right to ‘bear arms’.  That decision is also in compliance with America’s Constitution, the Second and Fourteenth amendments, but more than that what does that have to do with the economy and angst of this nation?

The United States gave itself the most gifted President in several generations, handed his party a majority in both houses of Congress, only to watch his presidency be swamped by the doleful legacy of the Bush years, a worldwide recession and its parlous aftermath, and a ferocious Republican opposition bent on a search-and-destroy mission of his presidency.

Wow, they still are star struck.  What evidence, after a year and a half, do they have that his president is anything above mediocre at best?  Here’s a flash to the Globe and Mail, the Democrats do not need one vote from the Republicans… they rule, therefore, they must take responsibility for all legislation, passed and pending.  Because they have majorities in both Houses and control the White House they can pass any legislation without any help at all from the other side of the aisle.

But rather than lay blame at a hapless presidency, they lay it at the feet of the previous administration and a few Republicans… is it any wonder this nation, world,  is divided… the media is no longer capable of rational deductions: “The United States gave itself the most gifted President in several generations”… are we about to rehash the ‘chills down the legs’ of the media again?

To make matters worse, the war in Afghanistan, into which President Barack Obama has poured thousands of additional soldiers and billions of borrowed dollars, is going poorly.

First,Obama never gave the Generals the numbers of troops they requested.  Second the numbers provided were  months late.  And third the Rules of Engagement (ROE) have been drastically changed resulting tying the hands of NATO Troops, and subsequently the deaths of countless American Troops.  But who does the Globe and Mail blame?

The U.S., far away, burdened with debt, its public having turned against the war, has already imposed a deadline for beginning some kind of withdrawal next year. Time is therefore running against the Americans, as are its allies, some of whom want out next year, including Canada, the Netherlands and Poland.

So, they are saying everything but: “It’s Bush’s fault”.  Note how they were not willing to even assign blame for the change in ROE and a withdrawal date to Obama.  The article goes on to blame Republicans for the lack of legislation for a new energy policy, with the mention of rouge Democrats from fossil fuel energy states such as West Virginian and the late Sen. Robert Byrd.   But the bottom line is that the media, foreign or national,  just doesn’t get it, and if any expect them to do anything except walk lock step with Obama in November they will be sadly disappointed.

Treatment For Sunburn -

A guy fell asleep on the beach for several hours and got a horrible sunburn, specifically to his upper legs.
He went to the hospital, and was promptly admitted
after being diagnosed with second-degree burns.
With his skin already starting to blister, and the severe pain he was in,
the doctor prescribed continuous intravenous feeding with saline, electrolytes,
a sedative,  and a Viagra pill every four hours.

The nurse, who was rather astounded, asked,
‘What good will Viagra do for him, Doctor’?

The doctor replied,
‘It won’t do anything for his condition,
but it’ll keep the sheets off his legs.’

Aging

There are three stages of life, youth, middle age, and “my you look good”!

Walking can add minutes to your life.
This enables you at 85 years old to spend an  additional
5 months in a nursing home  at $7000 per month.

My grandpa started walking
five miles a day when he was 60.
Now he’s 97 years old and we
don’t know where he is.

I like long walks,
especially when they  are taken
by people who annoy  me.

The only reason I would take up walking
is  so that I could hear heavy breathing again.

I have to walk early in the morning,
before my brain figures out what I’m  doing.

I joined a health club last year …
spent  about 400 bucks.
Haven’t lost a pound.
Apparently you have to go there.

Every time I hear the dirty word ‘exercise’,
I wash my mouth out with chocolate.

I do have flabby thighs,
but fortunately  my stomach covers them.

The advantage of exercising every day
is so when you die, they’ll say,
….’Well, she looks good doesn’t she.’

If  you are going to try cross-country  skiing,
start with a small country.

I know I got a lot of exercise the last few  years,……
….. just getting over the  hill.

We all get heavier as we get older,
because  there’s a lot more information in our heads.
That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

Immigration Policy From the Show Me State:

In 2007, Missouri placed on the ballot a proposed constitutional amendment designating English as the Official language of Missouri . Nearly 90% voting in favor! English became the official language for ALL governmental proceeding in Missouri . It also means no individual has the right to demand government services in a language OTHER than English.

In 2008 a measure was passed that requires our Highway Patrol and other law enforcement officials to verify the immigration status of any person arrested, and inform federal authorities if the person is found to be here illegally. It allows Missouri law enforcement offices to receive training to enforce federal immigration laws. The bill makes it clear that illegal immigrants will NOT have access to taxpayers benefits such as food stamps and health care through Missouri HealthNET.

In 2009 a measure was passed that ensures Missouri ‘s public institutions of higher education do NOT award financial aid to individuals who are here illegally. The law also requires all post-secondary institutions of higher education to annually certify to the Missouri Dept. of Higher Education that they have NOT knowingly awarded financial aid to students who are unlawfully present in the United States .

So while Arizona has made national news for its new law, it is important to remember Missouri has been proactive in addressing this growing problem.

Missouri has sent a clear message that illegal immigrants are NOT welcome in our state and they are certainly NOT welcome to receive public benefits at the cost of Missouri taxpayers!

But note Missouri passed these laws under the Bush Administgration!

Subject:  A Great Lady Has Passed

Pamela Murphy, widow of WWII hero and actor, Audie Murphy, died peacefully at her home on April 8, 2010. She was the widow of the most decorated WWII hero and actor, Audie Murphy, and established her own distinctive 35 year career working as a patient liaison at the Sepulveda Veterans Administration hospital, treating every veteran who visited the facility as if they were a VIP.

Any soldier or Marine who came into the hospital got the

same special treatment from her. She would walk the hallways with her clipboard in hand making sure her boys got to see the specialist they needed.

If they didn’t, watch out. Her boys weren’t Medal of Honor recipients or movie stars like Audie, but that didn’t matter to Pam. They had served their country. That was good enough for her.  She never called a veteran by his first name. It was always “Mister.” Respect came with the job.

“Nobody could cut through VA red tape faster than Mrs. Murphy,” said veteran Stephen Sherman, speaking for thousands of veterans she befriended over the years. “Many times I watched her march a veteran who had been waiting more than an hour right into the doctor’s office.  She was even reprimanded a few times, but it didn’t matter to Mrs. Murphy. “Only her boys mattered. She was our angel.”

Audie Murphy died broke in a plane crash in 1971, squandering millions of dollars on gambling, bad investments, and yes, other women.  “Even with the adultery and desertion at the end, he always remained my hero,” Pam told me.

She went from a comfortable ranch-style home in Van Nuys where she raised two sons to a small apartment – taking a clerk’s job at the nearby VA to support herself and start paying off her faded movie star husband’s debts.  At first, no one knew who she was. Soon, though, word spread throughthe VA that the nice woman with the clipboard was Audie Murphy’s widow. It was like saying General Patton had just walked in the front door. Men with tears in their eyes walked up to her and gave her a hug.

“Thank you,” they said, over and over.

The first couple of years, I think the hugs were more for Audie’s memory as a war hero. The last 30 years, they were for Pam.

One year I asked her to be the focus of a Veteran’s Day column for all the work she had done. Pam just shook her head no.

“Honor them, not me,” she said, pointing to a group of veterans down the hallway. “They’re the ones who deserve it.”

The vets disagreed. Mrs. Murphy deserved the accolades, they said.  Incredibly, in 2002, Pam’s job was going to be eliminated in budget cuts. She was considered “excess staff.”  ”I don’t think helping cut down on veterans’ complaints and showing them the respect they deserve, should be considered excess staff,” she told me.  Neither did the veterans. They went ballistic, holding a rally for her outside the VA gates.  Pretty soon, word came down from the top of the VA. Pam Murphy was no longer considered “excess staff.”

She remained working full time at the VA until 2007 when she was 87.

“The last time she was here was a couple of years ago for the conference we had for homeless veterans,” said Becky James, coordinator of the VA’s Veterans History Project.   Pam wanted to see if there was anything she could do to help some more of her boys.  Pam Murphy was 90 when she died last week. What a lady.

Have you ever wondered what happened to the 56 men who signed the
Declaration of  Independence ?

Five signers were captured by the British as traitors,

and tortured before they died.

Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned.

Two lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army;

another had two sons captured.

Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or

hardships of the Revolutionary War.

They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes,

and their sacred honor.

What kind of men were they?

Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists.

Eleven were merchants,

nine were farmers and large plantation owners;

men of means, well educated,

but they signed the Declaration of Independence

knowing full well that the penalty would be death if

they were captured.

Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and

trader, saw his ships swept from the seas by the

British Navy. He sold his home and properties to

pay his debts, and died in rags.

Thomas McKeam was so hounded by the British

that he was forced to move his family almost constantly.

He served in the Congress without pay, and his family

was kept in hiding. His possessions were taken from him,

and poverty was his reward.

Vandals or soldiers looted the properties of Dillery, Hall, Clymer,

Walton, Gwinnett, Heyward, Ruttledge, and Middleton.

At the battle of  Yorktown , Thomas Nelson, Jr., noted that

the British General Cornwallis had taken over the Nelson

home for his headquarters. He quietly urged General

George Washington to open fire. The home was destroyed,

and Nelson died bankrupt.

Francis Lewis had his home and properties destroyed.

The enemy jailed his wife, and she died within a few months.

John Hart was driven from his wife’s bedside as she was dying.

Their 13 children fled for their lives. His fields and his gristmill

were laid to waste. For more than a year he lived in forests

and caves, returning home to find his wife dead and his

children vanished.

So, take a few minutes while enjoying your 4th of July holiday and

silently thank these patriots. It’s not much to ask for the price they
paid.

Prayer Requests and Praises

Update: Camdyn Hill

Our sweet Camdyn Rose has been growing and blossoming like any other baby– in fact, we happen to believe she may have the sweetest little smile to ever have been smiled!  She loves her rice cereal and baby food, and is rolling over like a champ!  She is a bit smaller than her twin sister– Rylee is 17 lbs. while Cammie is hanging out around 12 lbs.  She also seems to tire out a bit faster due to the fact that her little heart has to work extra hard to get the blood flowing.  I have added a recent picture,
On Friday afternoon, Camdyn had an appointment with her cardiologist.  They were supposed to be scheduling her major surgery (open heart) to fix her VSD (Ventricular Septal Defect)– a hole in her heart.

They did an echocardiogram (two, in fact) and discovered that the temporary band they put around her heart in the early days after she was born has slipped.  The movement of the band has restricted the bloodflow to her pulmonary artery going into her right lung.  The result is that the blood flow has been restricted to a “trickle” (the surgeon’s word).  Thankfully, they found it today because there is a very real chance that she would have lost the lung if they hadn’t caught it in time.   Once again, we are amazed by God’s timing when it comes to this precious little girl’s heart!

Unfortunately, it also means that our girl has to endure a heart catheterization on Wednesday morning.  The surgeon will go in and try to fix the artery.  Please storm the gates of Heaven with your prayers for the surgery to go well!  If all goes as planned, they will then schedule the big surgery (VSD) for some time in the two weeks following.  If all does not go as planned, they will open up her chest and do the big surgery that evening or the next morning.

The cath procedure is actually considered out-patient, so we could get her back home as soon as Wednesday evening– we are praying for that!  Brother Les, Camdyn’s grandfather , Valarie’s husband has  a bladder/kidney infection… please pray for them both.
